Depression is one of the most widespread mental illnesses. Due to its far-reaching consequences and limitations, depression is to be taken very seriously and comprehensive treatment is of high importance. In most cases, depression manifests itself with symptoms such as depressed mood, feelings of hopelessness and listlessness. At the same time, those affected lose all sense of joy, pleasure and enthusiasm. Characteristic here is the helplessness of those affected. Due to the severity of the disease, it is not possible to influence the state of mind by willpower or self-discipline.

THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES FOR DEPRESSION

In the therapy of depression, there are several important procedures that significantly promote the healing process of the disease. Psychotherapeutic procedures, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, are also important components of holistic treatment. The combination of different forms of therapy is of utmost importance in order to give the patients back their vitality. If necessary, drug adjustments can also be made to support the recovery process.

SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

The first symptoms of depression turn out to be very non-specific in most cases, some of which can be seen as signs of different diseases during this early phase. Sometimes they also occur after a stressful time or after stressful events in the life of the affected person. Only over a period of several weeks or months are these symptoms so pronounced that a diagnosis becomes possible. Possible first signs are:

  • Pain (e.g. non-specific headache or abdominal pain)
  • Constant fatigue, lack of energy
  • waning sexual interest
  • Irritability
  • Fear
  • Increasing listlessness, apathy
  • glum mood
  • Sleep disorders
  • Loss of appetite

DIAGNOSIS OF DEPRESSION

Depending on the symptoms, which are difficult to interpret, the diagnosis of depression is also extremely extensive and long-term. Since not every bad day is a sign of depression requiring treatment, the symptoms – in their occurring severity – must be distinguished from mild sadness and temporary moodiness. Thus, in order to make a diagnosis, a comprehensive anamnesis is required, which is made up of various discussions with doctors, various surveys and discussions with relatives.
